REPOST from Cheryl Frost 2/09/15
Why I LOVE COMPETING….and WILL step on stage again in 2016
Lately Facebook has been flooded with negativity about competing. I understand there is a downside to anything that we give 100% to. But as Zig Ziglar famously penned: “what you get by achieving your goals is not nearly as important as what you BECOME by achieving your goals”
I, like many, LOVE competing. I’m passionate about what it can make of you, I’m passionate about the process, I love my job as a competition coach and you will be seeing me trying for a PRO show win in 2016.

Yes competing is as tough as it gets. It is an extreme sport (sorry Graeme Lancefield – lifestyle) We take our bodies and minds to their limits, we cannot stop when we are tired, we cannot eat when we are hungry, we cannot stay up late when the rest of the world is partying. We take ourselves to breaking point and then have to keep on going. Well-meaning friends and family do not understand what we are going through unless they have prepped before. Day after day there is no time off. Then for many there is dealing with the pangs of disappointment from comp day. Then boom – the hardest time of all for many, post comp – weight issues, eating issues, self-image issues. Geez! and I love this? YES I DO. Not because of the trophies, but because of what it makes of me.
Competitors are people who have stepped out of the realm of being the fit chick or the strong guy and take it to the next level. We are not content with the commonplace and have a burning passion to chisel our physiques into some sort of work of art – and this where the magic begins, the passion!
Stepping on stage requires a champion mindset of passion, discipline, commitment, consistency and focus. To step on stage means you have dug deep within and pressed on, not given up when you can’t lift your arms because of DOMS, not eating the cheesecake when the rest of the office is stuffing their faces and you are eating a small piece of grilled fish. To master oneself is one of the greatest powers.
Competing, and comp prep, takes guts, tenacity, heart, soul and courage. Passionately pursing a goal defines you, differentiates you from those who live their lives in mediocrity. Those who compete have said “I don’t want to be ordinary”, we are driven to excel and be the best we can be. We have to have faith, and believe in ourselves and in that process many overcome their own inner demons and move on to be strong, and inspirational.
Regardless of a trophy, stepping on stage means you are winner! This process makes you stronger, builds an indomitable spirit, teaches you persistence, determination, courage and in this you learn so much about yourself. You emerge having had one of the greatest of life’s experiences both psychologically and physically. You realise your mind is your most powerful tool in your arsenal of life’s survival kit. You learn how to master your thoughts, you realise your thinking becomes your reality and you find internal power, strength and resilience you never knew existed. You realise the importance of your attitude and positivity and you shatter any self-imposing myths that you could be too old or too average to do extraordinary things. Yes to be successful on stage requires Mental Excellence.
Through your achievements you become an inspiration to those around you. Every one of my competitors constantly inspire me. You become your own hero. You can stand tall and feel proud that you didn’t give up when the going got tough but that you found boldness and confidence and you achieved the goal you set out to achieve.
When you dedicate yourself to unleashing the extraordinary ability and potential of your body and mind, powerful forces start to happen in EVERY area of your life. I am also the most productive and effective during comp prep as I’m so focused and disciplined in ALL areas. When you start seeing improvements your confidence, energy and enthusiasm become alive and you find yourself becoming a far greater person than you ever dreamed possible.
Achievement is one of the greatest satisfactions in life. Achieving a stage physique is one of the greatest accomplishments in life. We are teaching our children how to set goals and stick to them, no matter how tough it gets. We are proving to ourselves that we are made of something stronger than we ever thought possible. It’s rewarding, it’s fulfilling, it’s exciting and it’s wonderful. But remember it is the journey and what it makes of you that matters. It is never about those few moments on stage. It is what the process makes of you. Never lose sight of that.
On top of that you create a kick-ass physique. Yes that’s superficial but hell who doesn’t want to feel fantastic in denim shorts and a LuLu racerback! Who wouldn’t want compete again knowing that next time you can improve. That is your ultimate goal. To improve yourself. That is true winning. To learn more about yourself. To understand the pain of disappointment and the humbling experience that brings and then not to give up, not to be bitter, but to be gracious and to try again is so character building. Once you have mastered this you move on to better things and realise that life is about serving others and using what you have – the experience, the knowledge, to make the world a better place. So if you have ever stepped on stage you have become a hero to someone. You are already an inspiration to those who have watched your journey. Be that inspiration.
I want to continue improving, physically, mentally and spiritually and I want to continue learning, researching and educating myself and others so that we know more and learn more and can be healthier and happier. And comp prep and competing is a wonderful avenue to unleash this potential, to be passionate about improvement, to master yourself, to master will-power and discipline as these are the character traits not only necessary for comp prep but for success in life.
See you on stage in 2016!
