This is a perfect example of a healthy, balanced diet.
Her ‘nutritionist’ tells her to replace the M&Ms with an apple because M&Ms are ‘bad’ and apples are ‘good’.
Benefit: None. She is already consuming a healthy diet. The apple is surplus to requirements and 5 M&Ms are not going to be detrimental to her health.
Cost: Woman feels restricted because she can’t include a small amount of the food she enjoys. Woman craves said food. She lasts for two weeks not eating the 5 M&Ms. Woman binge eats three packets of M&Ms. She ate a bad food therefore she is a bad person. Bad people need to be punished. She punishes herself for being bad by eating a pizza, a packet of Tim Tams, half a tub of ice cream, three donuts, 4 slices white bread with 100g Nutella …. now she can go back to being good again…
A diet is only ‘healthy’ if ‘healthy’ includes BOTH physical and mental health.
A diet that can’t be adhered to is a useless diet. Long term habit change leading to long term weight management should always be the goal.
Suffering does not equal success.
